Aikane Nursery has been an integral part of the North Kohala Community for the past 20+ years providing quality native plants. In 2011, Brad Belmarez took over nursery management, and in 2015, Brad and his brother Brandon founded Aikane Nursery & Landscaping, LLC. Brad has since expanded the nursery to provide a wide variety of exotic edibles and landscape/exotic ornamentals. Brandon has enhanced Aikane invaluably, creating a maintenance branch, offering Kohala full service lawn and yard maintenance with a reliable, efficient and dedicated team. With the dedication of a true family owned and operated business, the Belmarez brothers and their extended family love what they do, and you’ll love it too!
In 2011, I took over the care and management of Aikane Nursery, looking to turn over a new leaf, not knowing what would come of my new found love for plants, people, and life. In the beginning it was Tad, my brother Brandon, and me. We had no idea how a nursery operated, or what the communitywanted, but I did know that native plants were important and that is why I wanted to make this project work. We quickly learned how to propagate different plants and which conditions were best for each species. After a few months, my brother returned to the mainland in order to move to the island permanently, and I was all alone at the nursery, but not for long. The moment I began to wonder where I would find the right helpf or this project, a flood of bright, talented, hard-working individuals were at my doorstep eager to get there hands dirty, grow plants and live in this wonderful place.
It’s an indescribable joy to watch plants, animals, and humans grow together peacefully. When Master Cho and his Korean Natural Farming techniques came to Kohala, I was fortunate enough to procure a certification in Korean Natural Farming to be able to share and teach the knowledge. Now, I thrive on designing and installing landscape plans that incorporate dryland forest native plants, ornamentals and edibles to provide my clients with a crowd pleasing array of beauty and bounty.
Moving to the Big Island in 2004, Brandon brought his culinary skills and passion for fresh and seasonal food to Merman’s in Waimea, and managed the opening of their Waikoloa branch as well. Returning to Austin, Texas, to pursue real estate and start a family, he also pursued a passion in landscaping and maintenance. Returning to the island in 2014, Brandon hit the ground running, bringing his sharp business skills and maintenance division to Aikane.
